"And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,”leading you back into the fear of never being good enough.[But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,”
enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Abba, Father!”16 For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!” - Romans 8:15-16TPT
Abba is a Hebrew word meaning father. It is mentioned three times in the bible:
- Mark 14:36 as Jesus, in the garden of Gethsamane, asks Abba Father to take the cup of suffering from him.
- Gal 4:6 and Romans 8:15 as Paul reminds us that we are no longer slaves but sons of God, adopted into His very own family.
The word 'Abba' is not one that you utter in your own strength or conviction. As the verse above states, it rises up within us as the deep things of God call out to the deep things of man. In answering this call from the Spirit of God, we come to realise that He is our source. He is our beginning. He is the author and perfecter of our faith and it is in Him that we can truly learn who we are. It is in this place of intimate worship, that the Spirit of God entwines with the spirit of man and we join Him in saying the words of tender affection - Abba, Father.
Our world is going through an identity crisis. Hope seems scarce and Faith wanes cold. The only place we can find hope and answers is by going back to our source, the One who created us.
It is my hope and prayer that Words from Abba will reveal the Father's heart so you may be confident in who He is and what He has to say to and about you.
And the first thing to know is... You are loved.
